  Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
 

The American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support course is based onĀ science evidence from the 2005 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC. The goal of the PALS course is to aid the pediatric healthcare providerĀ in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Skills taught include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics. Course is taught by lecture, video and student participation.

 
 
Course Details
  • Learn hands-on with a manikin for one person CPR.
  • Learn hands-on with a manikin for two person CPR.
  • Group participation to develop hand skills with a manikin.
  • Automated External Defibrillation use, both adult and child.
  • Identification of the signs and symptoms of airway obstruction including dislodging techniques.
  • Recognition of the early warning signals of respiratory and cardiac arrest.
  • Identification of the signs and symptoms of stroke.
  • Understanding the functions of heart and lung anatomy.
  • Identification of risk factors.
  • Review of legal considerations for performing CPR to avoid litigation.
  • Child and infant CPR are presented.
  • Mouth-to-mask ventilation are presented.
  • Bag-Valve-Mask is presented.
 
 
Course meets the minimum requirements for Healthcare Provider CPR with American Heart Association certification valid for two years. Course length is six hours with a minimum score of 84% required on a written test.
