HEALTHCARE PROVIDER COURSE
CURRICULUM OUTLINE

 

INSTRUCTION BY LECTURE, VIDEO AND STUDENT EVALUATION ON MANIKINS

The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is designed to prepare a wide variety of healthcare professionals to recognize several life-threatening emergencies and to provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner.  This course includes adult, child, and infant rescue skills in both the out-of-hospital and in-hospital settings.

At the end of the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course students will be able to:

bulletDescribe the steps of CPR.
bulletWhen to start CPR.
bulletWhen to give breaths, including with barrier devices.
bulletWhen to check a pulse.
bulletHow to give compressions at the proper depth and rate and with complete chest recoil.
bulletWhen to use an AED.
bulletDescribe the signs and actions for severe airway obstruction in the responsive and unresponsive victim.
bulletDescribe the links of the Chain of Survival.
bulletActivating the appropriate emergency response system.
bulletPerforming CPR.
bulletProviding early defibrillation.
bulletEnsuring the arrival of early advanced care by activating 9-1-1.
bulletDescribe the signs of 4 common life-threatening emergencies in adults.
bulletCardiac arrest.
bulletChoking.
bulletStroke.
bulletHeart attack.

At the end of the course the student must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

bulletActivating the emergency response system.
bulletGiving breaths for adult, child, and infant victims.
bulletMouth-to-mouth ventilation.
bulletMouth-to-mask ventilation.
bulletBag-mask ventilation.
bulletGiving compressions for adult, child, and infant victims.
bulletPerforming 1-and-2 rescuer CPR for adult, child, and infant victims.
bulletUsing an AED for victims >1 year of age.
bulletRelieving choking in the responsive and unresponsive victim of any age.

Anyone who needs to know how to perform CPR in a healthcare setting can take this course.  This course focuses on students who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

bulletCourse meets the minimum requirements for Healthcare Provider CPR with American Heart Association certification valid for two years.
bulletCourse length is approximately 4 hours with a minimum score of 84% on a written exam.
